The past year has been a progressive one with a host of core activities and initiatives undertaken and aligned to the Corporate Plan. As the qualifying body for Architectural Technology, the Institute leads and promotes the discipline, the profession and its membership.

The AT Awards are the premier accolades that celebrate and demonstrate outstanding achievement in Architectural Technology. The Institute prides itself on delivering an Awards event which is creative, dynamic, innovative and fast paced.

Membership Grade Review 2018-2019
The proposed structure:
The Membership Grade Review recommendations are:
- phasing out of Technician, TCIAT;
- phasing out of profile candidate and amalgamating into affiliate status;
- introduction of affiliate status;
- introduction of a Fellow class; FCIAT
- introduction of an Honorary Fellow class, Hon FCIAT; and
- closing of the Honorary member class, in favour of Honorary Fellow class.

Architectural Technology Academy (ATA)
Launched in May 2019, the new home for CIAT's work in terms of education, CPD and training.
The ATA aims not only to support the development and promotion of Architectural Technology as an academic discipline but acts as a mechanism to assist the members to develop professionally.
The ATA's portfolio includes, but is not limited to:
- educational standards development for Accreditation, membership and bespoke or specialist qualifications;
- Accreditation of Honours degree level programmes;
- Accreditation of Masters degree level programmes;
- Accreditation of sub-Honours degree level programmes;
- Awarding Centre of Excellence status;
- Accredited Conservationist Register;
- Chartered Environmentalist qualification;
- AT CPD Register;
- developing and promoting research in Architectural Technology.
Future projects will be added to the ATA portfolio as they develop.

Architectural Technology: a professional insight events (AT:PI)
A roadshow to educate, engage and enthuse future professionals within the discipline. A fantastic opportunity for students to engage with Chartered Members, aspirATion members, and staff to learn about working as an Architectural Technology professional. A global initiative delivered in the UK, Denmark, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates in 2019.

A hugely successful initiative; aspirATion supports students, recent graduates or newly qualified professionals entering the discipline, as well as working with CIAT to shape the future of Architectural Technology. It is a dynamic, forward thinking and inclusive network, acting as the gateway into furthering their career within the discipline. Each Region, as well as the Europe and Republic of Ireland Centres, have their own dedicated aspirATion Group.
To support this the aspirATion Chair now has a vote at Council. This allows the views of the aspirATion Committee to be integrated at Council and have a voice at strategic level.
This has provided for a succession planning, new ideas and visions for the discipline, professional and the Institute, which keeps the Institute vibrant and enthused.

CIAT maintains its involvement as a stakeholder for apprenticeships. Detailed here are updates for the four Nations.
Mark Thompson, Managing Partner at Ryder Architecture, is the employer lead for the apprenticeship standards. There are two apprenticeship standards still in development which align closely with Architectural Technology; Level 4 Construction Design and Build Technician and Level 6 Construction Design Management. Both standards require clarification from the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) on their assessment plans. Whilst CIAT membership is encouraged, it does not form part of the assessment for either standard.
The Institute is exploring the possibility of providing External Quality Assurance (EQA) to both standards, to monitor the organisation offering the End Point Assessment and ensure it is conducting the assessment consistently and rigorously. The End Point Assessment organisation has yet to be determined. EQA also ensures the apprenticeship standard and end-point assessment plan are fit-for-purpose and delivering the outcomes that are required.
Regular checks are made for the development of a Higher apprenticeship in Architectural Technology. At Queen's University Belfast, two existing Masters degree programmes are offered as Higher apprenticeships.
Edinburgh Napier University, a Centre of Excellence, is the only educational establishment offering the Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) in Architectural Technology from September 2019; and the first in the UK.
The GA is taught via block-release, meaning apprentices will be at university for two-week blocks, three times a year. Employers as far as Shetland and Orkney can recruit locally and send apprentices to stay in Edinburgh for two weeks. Apprentices will be able to complete the Honours degree in four years, the same amount of time as traditional full-time students.
At this stage, Wales are not offering apprenticeships at HNC level or above.

Biophilic Design Project working in partnership with the Building Research Establishment (BRE)
A key engaged partner for BRE's Biophilic Design Project, the Institute has continued its activity in this project which is aimed at establishing the qualities of biophilic design in a live project and unlock improved welfare and productivity of staff, as well as enabling the creation of a working code for incorporation into mainstream office refurbishment.
