The clients' vision was to create a state-of-the-art care home that would enhance the quality of lives of those living with progressive brain conditions including Alzheimer's disease and Vascular dementia. The core aim was to ensure the design and technologies introduced would allow individuals to lead happy and fulfilled lives, supporting them to retain their independence for as long as possible, within a safe and homely environment. The design of the home adopts a contemporary aesthetic with bold contrasting colours and materials, complimenting the surrounding area. The large home was broken down into small self-contained lodges, with no more than 15 residents to a unit. Each lodge offers different levels of care to meet the needs of residents with lounges, dining areas, kitchenettes and an activity area, along with residents’ individual bedrooms which included knockers on bedroom doors, so as to encourage the sense of privacy for residents within their own rooms. The use of circadian lighting was considered for specific areas, as it has been proven to significantly improve the sleep/wake cycles for general health and wellbeing of the residents, whilst improving daytime cognition and engagement.
