Strategies to design tall buildings for fire safety

Greater London Region members are invited to a CPD seminar to be given by Dr. Feng Fu PhD MBA CEng MIStructE MICE MASCE FHEA.

The seminar will cover the following:

  • Lessons learnt from the Grenfell Tower disaster.
  • The basic knowledge and design codes in fire safety design for Architectural Technologists, engineers and architects.
  • The methodology for structural fire design using simple general-purpose finite element programmes such as Abaqus or ANSYS.
  • The compartmentation, evacuation route design.
  • The basic knowledge for structural fire design and correspondent design guidelines.
  • The modelling technique for fire analysis such as CFD, Zone model and finite element analysis.
  • Pertinent software such as OZONE, Abaqus and ANSYS will be introduced.
  • Some latest fire safety design strategy used in new projects such as the Burj Khalifa.

About Dr Fu
Dr Fu is a Chartered Structural Engineer, a committee member of Disproportionate Collapse Mitigation of Building Structure Standards and committee member of Blast Protection of Building Standard, American Society of Civil Engineers.  He is also an Editorial board member on Proceedings of Institution of Civil Engineers — Structures and Buildings. He is currently the Vice Chair of IStructE, North Thames branch.

When working in the WSP Group, he was involved in the structural fire design and analysis for the tallest building in Western Europe, the Shard. His paper entitled Grenfell Tower disaster: how did the fire spread so quickly? was first published in The Conversation hours after the disaster happened. This was then re-reported on the BBC Australia website; magazine New Scientist website and 10 other websites, has attracted around 200,000 reads worldwide. He was also consulted by CTV News Channel (Canada) and interviewed by newspaper ARA, Spain and radio station Voice of Islam regarding the fire safety design and the causes of the fire in Grenfell Tower. This paper gave an in-depth explanation of the reason for the disaster and pertinent fire safety design knowledge to ordinary readers across the world. He is also the author of three popular textbooks for the Civil Engineers Society.
