From Ark to Architectural Technology

Member receives career boost from apprenticeship scheme

A CIAT student member is being featured in a new video about apprenticeships.

James Jones, 24, from Merseyside was helped to find work through First Ark apprenticeships, and was able to study part time, eventually gaining an Honours degree in Architectural Technology from the University of Bolton. He now works full time as an Architectural Technology professional in the studio team at John McCall Architects in Liverpool.

First Ark, which works collaboratively with the public, private and social sectors is committed to creating opportunities for younger people and offers a range of apprenticeship opportunities across both office and trades roles. In 2015 it offered 18 apprenticeship opportunities and will be offering more towards the end of 2017.

Speaking in the video, James said 'Young people today face huge barriers as there's not enough jobs, there's not enough apprenticeship schemes out there. I think if many more companies would take on and adopt an apprenticeship scheme it would help young people...I'm very happy where I am and I look forward to growing within the business.'

Joanne Mountfield, associate at John McCall Architects, said: ‘Looking back, James’ apprenticeship couldn’t have come at a worse time for the construction industry.

‘However, thanks to the initial funding of the apprenticeship by First Ark, we made a commitment to continue this so James could fulfil his career ambition. As a business, we are very keen on supporting and nurturing local talent, and have a proud reputation of taking on trainees and apprentices whenever we can.

‘James is a real success story. The investment has paid dividends for us, James and the local community where he lives and works.’
