Ian Elmslie MCIAT

CIAT loses Founder Member and Gold Award winner

We regret to announce the death at the age of 77 of Mr Iain Elmslie MCIAT, an official founding member of CIAT (SAAT as it was then).

Iain was one of the 43 people who met on 12 February 1965 to establish the Institute. He was elected as National Education Committee Chairman, a role he took on for two years until 1967. He was also representative for Scotland.

The citation for his Gold Award, received in 2007, read as follows:

Iain was among the first year of Technicians (as they were then) to emerge from the Technicians architecture course in Manchester, established by Professor Denis Harper. Iain helped to form the North West Region (Manchester Chapter) on 1 March 1965 and acted as Chapter (Regional) Secretary.

Iain was the very first National Education Committee Chairman (now titled Vice-President Education) until 1967 when the role was taken over by one of the Institute’s legends, John Newey. Iain then became part of the Steering Committee, which was responsible for establishing SAAT. Iain also wrote and compiled the first Regional Education Officer’s Handbook.

Iain was the Institute’s representative to the joint SAAT/RIBA Education Committee from 1969-70 and also sat on the Examinations Board (1987-88) and the Membership and Education Committee from 1965-70.

A full tribute will appear in the next issue of AT Journal.
