May becomes the first PM to address National Housing Federation

Outline of government policy on social housing

The Rt Hon Theresa May MP addressed the National Housing Summit in London on 19 September, the first serving Prime Minister to do so.

Speaking of the problems facing the industry, Mrs May said 'fixing our broken housing market will not be quick or easy, but it can be done', and went on to outline a series of measures by HM government to help provide housing to the social sector.

Expressing her shock at finding out she was the first Prime Minister to address the biggest event on the housing association calendar, Mrs May said it 'speaks volumes about the way in which social housing has for too long...been pushed to the edge of the political debate.'

Among the progress made in the sector, Mrs May listed the government's investment of tens of billions of pounds in house building and infrastructure and a removal of 'unnecessary barriers' via the National Planning Policy Framework.
