Warm welcome in Chile

CIAT promotes British BIM expertise

The British Embassy and the British Chilean Chamber of Commerce hosted between 4 to 10 November a trade mission of British experts promoting the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) UK protocols in Chile. The mission coincided with a visit from the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Chile, Colombia and Peru, Mark Menzies MP and was supported by CIAT delegates Tara Page, International Director, and Solam Sizer MCIAT, Chair of Accreditation Panel.

The mission helped to further strengthen links between the UK and Chile on BIM, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last year between Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy(BEIS) / Innovate UK and Chile’s Production Development Agency(Corporación de Fomento de la Producción, CORFO) to promote UK BIM protocols in Chile.

Activities around the BIM trade mission included a breakfast with Her Majesty’s Ambassador, Fiona Clouder and Mr Menzies, and meetings with important contacts in both the public and private sector and academia.

Tara Page and Solam Sizer MCIAT met with the leader of the Pacific Alliance, Chilean Dignitaries, the British Ambassador, and UK Trade minister. They also attended meetings with various academic institutions and public and private bodies in Chile to promote CIAT as leaders in the field of BIM, and raise awareness of the benefits of Chartered Membership.

The mission was very well received by all parties, and there was significant interest generated in the mission, and CIAT.

Solam said 'As a British Citizen, and Latin American by birth, this was a great opportunity to help bring people together. Huge opportunity exists for the UK in general, and CIAT members to access Latin America as an area of vast potential for economic activity. It was fantastic to see how much interest was generated in UK BIM Protocols. We were able to raise international interest in CIAT, and underline our role in BIM Leadership in the UK and worldwide.'

There was also significant interest from academic bodies in formal accreditation of courses to provide routes to membership for Chilean graduates. A return visit is planned in the near future to build upon this success.
